Cape Town winter activities

Everyone is undoubtedly caught up in the explosive party atmosphere that hit Cape Town on June 10... and will continue til mid July. If you're looking for something other than the soccer to keep you busy (or maybe you're just tired of the vuvuzelas blasting away what's left of your eardrums, then head to any of these awesome events:

7–30 June

Did you know? In the first study to decipher the hyena’s so-called ‘laugh’, scientists have shown that the pitch of it reveals the hyena’s age. There’ll be lots of human laughs at the Vodacom Funny Festival (Baxter Theatre). The five-week event features international guests ventriloquist Paul Zerdin, The Raymond & Mr Timkins Revue, Paul Morocco and Mario: Queen of the Circus, plus local comics Riaad Moosa, Ndumiso Lindi, Alan Committie and Al Prodgers. Tickets from R110 at Computicket.

11-30 June

Did you know? Washing your hair with beer makes it soft and shiny. But who wants to waste a good beer? Glug down cold drafts and chow down on German cuisine while enjoying the picturesque Nitida Wine Estate (Durbanville), or what the big screen TV’s have to offer during the Cassia Beer Fest. Book tables at 021-976-0640 or email

19 June

Did you know? Coca-Cola used to contain 9mg of Cocaine per glass, but this was removed in 1903. Get a natural high while pumping endorphins at the Greyton Classic offering mountain biking adventures and trail runs at distances of 10km, 21km and 45km along the foot of the majestic Overberg mountains. Bring the whole family for a day of fun in this quaint town. Enter online at or contact 083-566-5783.

27 June

Did you know? The oldest person who ever lived was Jeanne Louise Calment who died at the age of 122 years and 164 days. The fair is from 10am – 4pm, entrance is free, contact 083-444-0133.
