Feed Me Friday – a charity dinner to attend this weekend

Hosted by The Clubhouse at Claremont Cricket Club and Isangqa Sobomi (Circle for Life), Feed Me Friday is a new charity dinner initiative that will focus on creating upliftment and education for the underprivileged fishing community of Hout Bay.

With only a limited amount of tickets available, Capetonians are urged to make a difference and join the festivities at the launch of Feed Me Friday.
Local entertainment will include an appearance by the Ad Libitum Ensemble while guests can take part in a silent auction and stand a chance to win prizes including spa vouchers and complimentary nights at luxury hotels.

De Companje - best breakfast spot in Stellenbosch

This weekend I went to the fabulous little foodie emporium and bakery, De Companje in Stellenbosch for lunch.

Well, De Oude Bank Bakkerij is now just part of the expansion of the brand (no called De Companje), which features a wine shop, artisan ice cream section, fruit and veg section, artisanal food products (juices, yoghurts, jams, preserves, pestos etc), a boutique butchery, a coffee roastery and of course the original bakery-cum-cafe still operates serving the most astounding home-made breads (THE BEST SOUR DOUGH EVER!!)

Their coffee is superb and it's definitely worth going for breakfast if you can get a seat before 11:30.
Their pastries are mostly sold out by then and you don't want to miss the chocolate bread sticks or the Pastel de natas - hmmmmmmmm. Heavenly!

De Companje Oude Bank Bakkerij sandwhich with baby spinach, bacon, caranelised onions and feta on 90% rye sour dough bread. So delicious!

Friendly advice: miss the post-church rush on a Sunday and get there early because they sell out every day.

Awesome new FREE wine tasting evenings at the Pepperclub Hotel

A fabulous new series of wine tasting evenings have started at Pepperclub Hotel & Spa in Loop Street. The Pepperclub wine tasting series will run until the 14 November 2013.

Each week, the informal wine tasting evening will be held in the hotel’s Paparazzi Bar & Lounge from 17h30 until 19h30. Presented by well–informed wine makers and ambassadors, guests will have the opportunity to sample some of South Africa’s top wines.

Tickets for this year's cape Town Festival of Beer are now on sale!

Here's what to expect:

The festival will be taking over Hamilton’s Rugby Club in Green Point on the 22nd-24th November for a weekend of all things beer. With 200 beers on show, local and international brewers, home, craft and mega brewers as well as brewing demonstrations, best beer awards, food and beer pairings and guided beer tours there is plenty to learn about the much-loved golden nectar.

For the first time ever, the festival will be running a GIANT Beer Pong tournament throughout the course of the weekend. Unlike traditional beer pong this will consist of giant balls which will need to be thrown into giant cups measuring 1.5m high. After the massive success of the first FedGroup Presents Colour Me Crazy 5km Run & Colour Festival in Joburg on the 21st of September the event is heading to Cape Town! It will take place on the 26th October at the West Coast Ostrich Ranch and will be bringing a day packed with colour, movement, music and dancing!
In an exciting new addition to the event, individuals who wish to cycle the 5km can now do so on mountain bikes! The cyclists will kick off the 5km and will be followed by the runners through the colourful route! Early bird tickets are now open for cyclists and will be available until the 19th of October.

Franschhoek Uncorked 2013 - what we drank, ate and saw

Last month I went to the Franschhoek Uncorked wine festival in the Franschhoek valley. It was pouring with rain, but otherwise, a very wonderful wine-consuming day.
Much like Wacky Wine (although for a slightly older, more sophisticated crowd), guests get a pass which allows for tastings at different participating wineries.
We went on a Sunday, so we couldn't get too out of hand, but had a fabulous day visiting some of our favourite spots (and some we hadn't been to before).

We started at our faithful Haute Cabrière, where my hubby tried his luck at tossing tennis balls into a tyre on the lake in order to wine a prize. He won a bottle of bubbly last year, but sadly (and because of the strong winds - he said) he couldn't quite get it right this time round. So we went off to try the new vintage of the Tranquille and the Pinot Noir Chardonnay. The Belle Rose is a truly lovely bubbly.

Next we headed off in search of The Chocolate Block - famed red wine blend from a winery called Boekenhoutskloof. They also make the Porcupine Ridge and Wolftrap range of wines.
They have just launched the new vintage of the blend and have changed the percentage break down slightly. It's quite different in terms of flavour, compared to the previous vintages. I was a big fan of '08 and '09. Boekenhoutskloof is not normally open on the weekends, so if you have to opportunity to visit the estate, you must.
Our next stop was down the road at La Bri. I do love their Viognier and, as I hadn't been to the winery before, we made a quick stop before meeting up with our friend Rudi (winemaker of D'Aria) for lunch.

We decided to try The Kitchen at Maison Wine Estate for lunch. While we waited for a table we samples their wines by the fireplace (it was a chilly September day). We also did a cheese and wine pairing. They are known for their Shiraz and it's so worth popping in if you are Shiraz lover like me. 

I had the line fish for lunch and hubby and Rudi had the pork belly. The food was delish, although I think a little overpriced. But it was worth trying it out.

Our last stop was Franschhoek Cellar. They hosted wines from a few different producers, so we got to taste a number of different wines and had delicious nougat and strawberries dipped in chocolate fountain chocolate. They also had a boutique chocolate maker and a cheesemaker showcasing their produce. Naturally my sweet-toothed husband was obsessed with the chocolates, and only regrets not buying more. I really liked the Franschhoek Cellars Shiraz (no surprises there)...

New Menu at Makaron at Mejaka House - perfect gourmet getaway

I've just come back form a bit of a sabbatical, with some much-needed down-time and plenty of reading, beach walking and general indulgent lazing about in the Eastern Cape.

I also have so so so much to write about!!! Just before I left, I visited a variety of restaurants, wineries and had some amazing wine-filled festival fun. So I have to spend the next couple weeks catching up on my writing and sharing...

And no better way to start it off than by introducing you to some of the new dishes on Makaron's new menu. Majeka House (the stunning boutique hotel just outside Stellenbosch which houses Makaron) is the perfect gourmet getaway destination. Closely located to numerous wineries and local eateries, it's a luxurious accommodation spot with a great spa and, of course, its own very well-known eatery.

After a trip overseas Chef Tanja Kruger has returned with renewed vigor and intriguing ideas which translate beautifully on her plates of colourful and refreshing food. My husband and I were invited to try some of the new dishes and although we had different favourites, we both agreed that the set menu was wonderful.

I was particularly taken with her thin rye crispy breads and the variety of salts and butters presented to the table. I also loved the use of pairing local craft beers as well as wine with some of the dishes.
